Most cross-border trade problems trace back to weak supplier vetting. These five checks take a few days and can save you an entire container's worth of money.

1. Business Licence

Ask for the business licence and check the registered name, address and scope match what they advertise. A factory licence covering "manufacturing" beats a trading company for custom work.

2. Paid Sample First

Never skip the sample step. A supplier unwilling to send a paid sample is a red flag, no matter how attractive the price.

3. Live Video Call

Ask for a walkthrough of the workshop on video. Fifteen minutes on camera tells you more than a hundred emails.

4. Third-Party Inspection

For orders above a few thousand dollars, budget for an inspection before shipment. It costs little and catches quality issues while the goods are still at the factory.

5. Sensible Payment Terms

Standard terms are 30% deposit, 70% against B/L copy. Be cautious with any request for 100% prepayment from a new supplier.
